The following training sessions are being offered FREE through a grant from the NYS Department of Labor Hazard Abatement Board. Attend any or all topics.

 

Job Safety Analysis (8:30am-4pm) - FREE

Job Safety Analysis (JSA) is a proven process for controlling operating hazards and costs. Get a step-by-step overview of the process and define your role in making it effective
Recommended for: Safety, Health and/or Environmental Professionals or Managers who have industrial hygiene responsibilities but limited training or experience in the area.

Learn to:
  • Recognize and use important safety & health terminology
  • Understand JSA's relation to continuous improvement in your organization
  • Identify and communicate the safety and health benefits of using JSA
  • Gain support for and participation in the process from line employees, supervisors, and upper management
  • Identify the key requirements for a successful JSA
  • Recognize the hazards inherent in risk performance
  • Develop appropriate solutions and hazard controls
  • Complete a JSA form correctly

    Incident Investigation (8:30am-4pm) - FREE

    Focus on techniques for gathering complete, accurate and objective accident data used to arrive at true root causes and determine corrective action. Further examine and analyze data as a means of preventing injuries, property damage and financial losses.

      Learn to:
    • Employ effective investigation and interview techniques
    • Analyze accidents to identify "true"" root causes
    • Describe human relations issues affecting accident reporting.
    • Participants will examine: Incidents to investigate
    • On-site investigation process
    • Data to include in investigation reports
    • Witness interview techniques
    • Post action: hazard control measures and follow-up.

    Ergonomics: Managing for Results (8:30am-4pm) - FREE

    Repetitive motion and overexertion are the biggest risk factors facing American workers today. We’ll show you how to reduce the number and severity of musculoskeletal injuries in your workplace with a practical and effective ergonomics program.

    • Learn the basic concepts relating of ergonomics in the workplace
    • Gain Skills to recognize ergonomic risk factors related to Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs)
    • Determine how to conduct an ergonomic worksite analysis and evaluate & rank hazards
    • Assess various control methods and select the method best suited to the level of risk
    • Identify steps to implementing a successful ergonomics program at your workplace

Coaching the Lift Truck Operator Train-The-Trainer

Learn how to train your lift truck operators using the National Safety Council’s Coaching the Lift Truck Operator training program. Upon completion of this one-day seminar you’ll be able to: Identify operator training requirements and definitions from OSHA and NIOSH  Recognize the skills required for safe operation and maintenance of powered industrial trucks  Develop an in-house operator training program that meets and exceeds OSHA requirements using NSC’s Coaching the Lift Truck Operator packaged training program  Design exercises to evaluate hands-on performance by operators  Educate non-operators on how to work safely around powered industrial trucks.

Each attendee receives one Operator Response Book plus the complete Coaching the Lift Truck Operator Instructor Kit (including Leader’s Guide with DVD or VHS & CD-Rom).

CEVO Ambulance 3 Train-the-Trainer

April 12, 2012 (9am-4pm)

 Newly revised, this program adapts proven defensive driving techniques to the unique nature of ambulance work, training drivers to navigate traffic safety in emergency and non-emergency situations. Topics covered include adverse weather conditions; blind spots and cushion of safety; intersections, passing & lane changes; safe backing and parking; scanning and traffic hazard identification; vehicle handling, design and inspection. Participants will receive the CEVO Ambulance 3 Instructor Kit which includes a fully-scripted Instructor Guide, video presentation on VHS or DVD, group discussion diagrams to reinforce key coaching points (on DVD or in Power-Point on CD-ROM) and reproducible observational checklist.

Principles of Occupational Safety & Health (POSH) – an ASC program

April 16-20, 2012 (12noon-4pm Monday, 8am-4pm Tuesday-Thursday, 8am-12noon Friday)

Earn your Certificate in Principles of Safety by completing POSH. The objective of POSH is to provide students with the knowledge and skills to effectively organize and operate a safety program for any size or type of industry. First Aid and CPR/AED Instructor Development Course
May 9-11, 2012 (9am-4pm each day)

National Safety Council’s course is perfect for organizations that regularly train people in First Aid, CPR and/or AED and are looking for the most current and effective training program available. The courses are your tool for training employees or the general public on the latest skills, techniques and expertise in life-saving procedures.

This dynamic 4-day course is divided into two parts. In the first part, candidates will participate as students in the actual First Aid, CPR and AED courses they will be teaching. In the second part, candidates learn effective training methods and try their hands at evaluating CPR skill performances, AED presentations and skill demonstrations. Upon successful completion you will obtain official certification to teach these emergency care courses.

Fundamentals of Industrial Hygiene - an ASC Program

June 4-8, 2012 (12noon-4pm Monday, 8am-4pm Tuesday-Thursday, 8am-12noon Friday)

This course is designed to develop a basic understanding of industrial hygiene terminology and principles. Through lecture, workshops, case study and equipment demonstrations, participants build their ability to address workplace health issues. During the course a variety of strategies will be used to improve the transfer of training from the class to the job. Each participant will have the opportunity to practice new learning during the class, examine ways to apply new skills on the job, become familiar with excellent resources and discuss barriers to implementation and how to overcome them.

Safety Management Techniques – an ASC program

October 22-26, 2012 (12noon-4pm Monday, 8am-4pm Tuesday-Thursday, 8am-12noon Friday)

Based on sound safety, management, quality and performance technology principles, Safety Management Techniques is a 30-hour course that will help you manage employees and/or projects in your safety and health efforts. Program content, case studies, exercises and discussions focus on the practical knowledge and skills required to effectively deal with safety-related organizational practices, environmental conditions, and human relations issues.

You will examine your function and leadership role as a safety and health practitioner as special knowledge and skills are covered in the course. As a special review activity, you’ll assess your own organization’s safety and health practices and create a management plan that you can take back to your facility for implementations. 3 NSC CEU’s awarded

CEVO Fire 3 Train-the-Trainer

November 8, 2012 (9am-4pm)

Since 1994, more than 500,000 fire apparatus operators have been trained using CEVO programs – the standard in driving training for emergency vehicles. This program is a must for private, volunteer and municipal fire personnel who want to arrive safely at the emergency scene. This highly interactive program promotes critical thinking during pressure situations. Instructor materials are easy to teach and implement. Topics include how to operate the vehicle on various road surfaces and in adverse weather conditions, apparatus inspection, driving with and without sirens, safety at the fire ground and more. Course materials include fully scripted instructor guide; apparatus inspections & real-life driver scenarios on DVD; group discussion diagrams and situational analyses to reinforce key coaching points; observation checklist; Fire Maneuvering Skills video; test exercises; Administrator guide and more.
